Michael Meyer Marmelstein was born on January 26th 1927 as the fourth son of Isidor and Bertha Marmelstein. His parents were Russian Jewish Immigrants. He grew up during the Great Depression. The family lived in the Bronx at ‘Homes street’. The same road Tony Curtis grew up. When Michael Marmelstein turned seventeen, he joined the Army and was sent abroad, to Europe. Helping to free Europe in WW II. He was attached to the 10th Mountain Division. When he came back he was able to study under the G.I. Bill of Rights. Michael chose to enter the Arts Students League at New York. He was a student in the period from september 1952 till the end of januari 1956. The remarkable aspect is that he started with sculpturing. He was intrigued by his last name, Marmel - Marble. He was a student of John Hovannes (1900-1973) and Nathaniel Kaz (1917). For unknown reasons yet he changed from discipline and started of painting. For a few years he left for Mexico and study art at the University. He is a true auto-didact in this discipline.
He made oil on canvases, acrylic Works, experimental acrylics with silver paper and plaster, etchings; lithographs. The themes or subjects of his work are People, New York City landmarks; New York City and especially The Chess Players at Washington Square Park, People watching the Chess players, bar scenes. He was definitely influenced by what he had seen and had gone through in the second World War.
The Waiting Train, a lithograph made in 1967 was in a Juried Members’ Exhibit in the Philadelphia Print Club (nowadays ‘The Print Center‘), December 8th - December 28th 1967.
He exhibited in New York City at the Ceceile Gallery (used to be at 62W. 56St; near the Arts Students League. Lawrence or ‘Larry’ Alboum was also a student at the Arts Students League and exhibited at the same Gallery), he joined the famous Washington Square Outdoor Art show. He had an exhibition at the First National bank of San Antonio, Texas in March 1968. He also exhibited in Germany (Stuttgart), Venezuela (Caracas) and Poland (Warsaw).

Biography Anthonie (Anton) Vanteyne, van Teyn, van Teijn (1863-1943)
The artist Anton van Teyn(e) was born on 3 November 1863 in Naaldwijk, the Netherlands. He came from a traditional Jewish family but outgrew his background and eventually alienated from it. After both his parents had died he deliberately lost all contact with his remaining relatives in Naaldwijk. Whenever Van Teyn came over to Holland, he stayed with his cousin Gabriël Benjamin Wolf and his family in Amersfoort. He died with the family Wolf on May 28th 1943 at Amersfoort.

The book aims to give correct information and facts about Anton van Teyn`s life but will also be a tribute to the special bond and friendship between Anton van Teyn(e) and Gabriël Benjamin Wolf. Unfortunately many inaccuracies have been published about this artist.
